“What the world is facing is an increasingly authoritarian regime that neglects its government to go solo,” expressed the UN Women chair at the ILYMUN conference, echoing concerns about the implications of Donald Trump’s recent election. As young delegates from around the world gathered in Lyon, France, to discuss pressing issues under the theme of democracy and security in a world of conflict, I asked a critical question to each participant: What are your thoughts on the recent American election of Donald Trump, and do you think it could eventually lead to a Third World War? The diverse responses revealed a plethora of fears and uncertainties that resonate with the vast majority of the participants in the ILYMUN 2025 conference.
Concerns Over Global Stability
Many participants voiced apprehensions about Trump’s impact on international relations. Some highlighted his controversial stance on immigration and relationships with neighboring countries, suggesting that his policies could alienate key allies and escalate tensions. One chair noted that the potential for conflict with Europe is real, fearing that Trump’s unilateral approach might provoke significant geopolitical rifts. This sentiment was echoed by another admin who warned that Trump's actions could inadvertently recreate conditions reminiscent of pre-World War II, raising alarms about global stability.
Economic Strategies and Their Implications
While many expressed concern over Trump's leadership style, there were also voices that acknowledged the complexities of his economic policies. Delegates of Israel and Syria noted that Trump’s focus on internal production over reliance on foreign economies, particularly China, could strengthen the U.S. economy. Yet, this perspective was tempered by warnings about the long-term sustainability of his economic strategies and their potential to disrupt global markets. The discord between those who support his economic vision and those who criticize it as short-sighted highlighted a significant divide among young leaders.

Voices on Human Rights and Equality
The discourse around Trump also included vital discussions on human rights. Delegates and even admins raised concerns about the implications of his policies on marginalized communities, particularly regarding women's rights and access to healthcare. Critiques focused on how Trump's approach could undermine hard-won freedoms and exacerbate existing inequalities. This reflection on human rights was a poignant reminder of the vital connection between democratic governance and the protection of individual freedoms, a principle that the United Nations champions.
A Global Perspective on Leadership
As discussions continued, the fear of escalating tensions with major powers such as Israel and even Europe loomed large. Participants articulated concerns about Trump inadvertently empowering authoritarian leaders such as Putin, raising questions about the future of democratic governance worldwide. A delegate from Syria emphasized the destructive potential of such leadership on international relations, while others expressed skepticism about whether the world is on the brink of a new Cold War or a more direct conflict.
Conversely, some attendees suggested that the possibility of a third world war is overstated, pointing to Europe’s military strength as a counterbalance to potential aggression. This mix of optimism and caution underscored the complexity of the current geopolitical landscape, revealing a wide spectrum of ideas about the future. Is this hopefulness or reality?
Conclusion
As ILYMUN delegates navigated these challenging conversations, it is clear that the implications of Trump's election extend far beyond American borders and inhabits the dates of European youth today. The fears of authoritarianism, the complexities of economic policies, and the urgency of protecting human rights are all critical themes that emerged during the conference. The discussions highlighted a shared responsibility among young leaders to advocate for democratic principles and to foster dialogue in an increasingly polarized world.
In these uncertain times, the commitment to uphold democracy and security is essential. The insights gathered from ILYMUN serve as a reminder that the voices of youth are crucial in shaping a more peaceful and equitable global future. Through collaboration and understanding, this next generation can work to ensure that the principles of democracy endure, and that the lessons learned from the past guide them as they step into possible leadership roles on the world stage.
