The Historical Security Council at ILYMUN: Rewriting the Past
The HSC provides a fascinating challenge to delegates by simulating past conflicts as if they were happening in real time. Unlike the traditional Security Council, which deals with contemporary crises, the HSC asks participants to approach historical conflicts without the benefit of hindsight. Instead of analyzing events with full knowledge of their outcomes, delegates must immerse themselves in the mindset of policymakers at the time and attempt to navigate crises with the limited information available.

Global Threats to Human Rights: Complex Struggles to Watch Out for
The recent declaration of martial law in South Korea threatens the country's institutional and democratic stability, as well as those of the region. In fact, this dictatorial measure represents a break with the country's long-running commitment to the mechanisms of international consensus for the maintenance of peace and security around the world. It also implies the takeover of tyranny in a region historically sensitive to totalitarianism, joining the authority of the neighboring nuclear power. It is in this context that United Nations (UN) entities such as the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) come in to ensure respect for human rights in the face of emerging possible threats.

Social aspects of ILYMUN
ILYMUN, the International Lyon Model United Nations, is an annual conference that is organized and brought together by ISL, the International School of Lyon, and CSI, the Cité Scolaire Internationale. This conference encaptures the concept of learning new skills, bringing together students from around the globe to engage in discussions on pressing global issues. ILYMUN not only helps develop leadership, teamwork, and diplomatic skills, but also social ones. The social aspects of the conference add entertainment, liveliness, and relaxation to the intense debates, allowing everyone to form new friendships and create memorable experiences together.

The essential role played by the General Assembly in the United Nations
The UN (United Nations) was founded on the 24th of October 1945 in San Francisco (California), along with its five permanent security council members (US, UK, Soviet Union - now Russia, China, and France), who signed and ratified the San Francisco chart to promote peace between the leading countries. At that time, the aftermath of the two world wars had devastated the world, and leaders were yearning for stability as the pain was felt throughout the population. Over the years, more countries joined this alliance, and multiple diplomatic relations emerged. The United Nations' main goals remain international peace and security, giving humanitarian help to those in need, protecting human rights, and upholding international laws. The UN proactively reacts to any uprising challenge in the world by the active participation of its member states. These goals are obtained through fostering relationships and engaging in dialogue; through consistent communication between countries around the world, conflict can be avoided as soon as it emerges.

The United Nations’ Evolution in a Modern World
The United Nations is often referred to as one of the most significant global organisations in modern history, fostering a reputation of promoting pacific relations between countries. However, the UN’s role has warped and changed significantly since its creation in 1945 in the aftermath of the second world war, leaving the rest of the globe pondering on its real influence and the futility of its impact on global politics. This article explores the origins of the United Nations, the key milestones of the organisation and its shifting geopolitical dynamics through time.

Why These Issues Matter: Opinions of the Secretaries General

United Nations : A mutual desire to change the world
Originally set up with the objective of being ‘one place where the world's nations can gather together, discuss common problems and find shared solutions.’, the United Nations (UN) is considered today as the world’s largest and most important international organisation. Every year, its 193 member States meet up to debate with the objective of cultivating international peace and security as well as maintaining positive relations between nations to reach global unity. In a modern world filled with constant changes and expanding complexity, it represents a vital institution to help countries adjust; as such, they can improve in a collaborative manner to ensure the world has a peaceful future.

The United Nations Women Committee at ILYMUN 2025
United Nations Women is an “entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women.”¹ Four different bodies existed within the UN system that dealt with issues related to women. These were the Division for the Advancement of Women, the International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women, the Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, and the UN Development Fund for Women. In 2010, these institutions merged together to form UN Women, an organisation which covers a plethora of topics approached with a gender-centred perspective.

ILYMUN: Preparing Young Minds for Global Leadership
This year’s conference's theme, chosen by the secretaries general, is "Democracy and Security in a World of Conflict". This topic was selected because it shed light on a crucial issue that is threatening our society today – democracy in crisis. This global issue will thus encourage participants to think critically and engage in meaningful discussions about these real-world challenges.

Democracy and Security in a World of Conflicts
In today’s world, there is a balance between democracy and security which has become an increasingly fragile issue. Democracy may seem like a stable and well-established system in many parts of the world, however it is constantly under threat, especially in regions impacted by conflicts and political instability.
