The OHCHR and UN Women committees at ILYMUN 2025
The young minds preparing to shape the political landscape of the future (ILYMUN in Action)
“Policy-making is constantly evolving. One day, you’re writing with pencils; the next, pencils are banned because of the material they contain. Change happens rapidly, and young people need to be part of it. I wish I had been more engaged earlier – staying informed, following the news, and connecting with other young activists.”
– Teresa Byrne, Guest Speaker at ILYMUN 2025

Learning by Doing - An interview with Xan Rice
During my time in ILYMUN 2025, I had the great pleasure to interview Xan Rice, a freelance journalist who previously worked for many known newspapers, like the New Yorker, and as the Guardian’s East African correspondent. He presented a small speech to the security council, and gave a crisis scenario for the delegates to debate on.

The Future of Democracy In a World of Unprecedented Politics
"Political stability is a situation characterized by preserving an intact and smoothly functioning government or political system, avoiding significant disruptions or changes over an extended duration." (Wikipedia). Over the last century, constant disruptions and conflicts have impacted the stability of democratic regimes. Democracy's fundamentals rely on the citizen's voice in the election of a representative leader. Democratic regimes can take multiple shapes and forms with direct and indirect systems. However, the people's choice remains the most important criterion to ensure that the ones with power are the ones who represent the population.

The impact of financial crimes on democracy and security in a world of conflict – An interview with Nick Court
Nick Court's journey into financial crime investigation began in 2002 when he joined the UK police as a civilian intelligence analyst, initially focusing on local crimes before advancing to international drug trafficking and corruption cases. Realizing he wanted a more active role, he became a police officer with the City of London Police, known for its expertise in financial crime. Over the years, he specialized in economic crime, fraud, money laundering, and intellectual property crime. His work included tackling digital piracy and counterfeit goods, even leading a major COVID-related fraud investigation. In 2020, he joined INTERPOL, expanding his expertise on a global scale.

Exterior looks on day 3 of ILYMUN 2025
Hi, I’m Colombe, from l’Oiselet high school. I had the opportunity to attend day three of the ILYMUN conference in Lyon on March 15th. Let me tell you how it went.

The Future for Women - Interview with Sarah Blin
On the second day of ILYMUN 2025, the UN Women Committee heard from Sarah Blin, the guest speaker for this year’s conference. Formerly the Oxfam and Handicap International Country Director for Nepal, Sarah Blin is now an independent consultant, having worked on several projects with UNICEF and UN Women. She presented a world crisis to the ILYMUN UN Women Committee, explaining that women in the world today face many challenges, notably being allowed the same rights as men, being recognised for their role in the care economy, and their representation in politics. After her presentation, she was interviewed by Eva Black, a member of the press team, as follows:

The Historical Security Council at ILYMUN: Rewriting the Past
The HSC provides a fascinating challenge to delegates by simulating past conflicts as if they were happening in real time. Unlike the traditional Security Council, which deals with contemporary crises, the HSC asks participants to approach historical conflicts without the benefit of hindsight. Instead of analyzing events with full knowledge of their outcomes, delegates must immerse themselves in the mindset of policymakers at the time and attempt to navigate crises with the limited information available.

Social aspects of ILYMUN
ILYMUN, the International Lyon Model United Nations, is an annual conference that is organized and brought together by ISL, the International School of Lyon, and CSI, the Cité Scolaire Internationale. This conference encaptures the concept of learning new skills, bringing together students from around the globe to engage in discussions on pressing global issues. ILYMUN not only helps develop leadership, teamwork, and diplomatic skills, but also social ones. The social aspects of the conference add entertainment, liveliness, and relaxation to the intense debates, allowing everyone to form new friendships and create memorable experiences together.

Why These Issues Matter: Opinions of the Secretaries General

United Nations : A mutual desire to change the world
Originally set up with the objective of being ‘one place where the world's nations can gather together, discuss common problems and find shared solutions.’, the United Nations (UN) is considered today as the world’s largest and most important international organisation. Every year, its 193 member States meet up to debate with the objective of cultivating international peace and security as well as maintaining positive relations between nations to reach global unity. In a modern world filled with constant changes and expanding complexity, it represents a vital institution to help countries adjust; as such, they can improve in a collaborative manner to ensure the world has a peaceful future.

The United Nations Women Committee at ILYMUN 2025
United Nations Women is an “entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women.”¹ Four different bodies existed within the UN system that dealt with issues related to women. These were the Division for the Advancement of Women, the International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women, the Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, and the UN Development Fund for Women. In 2010, these institutions merged together to form UN Women, an organisation which covers a plethora of topics approached with a gender-centred perspective.

ILYMUN: Preparing Young Minds for Global Leadership
This year’s conference's theme, chosen by the secretaries general, is "Democracy and Security in a World of Conflict". This topic was selected because it shed light on a crucial issue that is threatening our society today – democracy in crisis. This global issue will thus encourage participants to think critically and engage in meaningful discussions about these real-world challenges.

Democracy and Security in a World of Conflicts
In today’s world, there is a balance between democracy and security which has become an increasingly fragile issue. Democracy may seem like a stable and well-established system in many parts of the world, however it is constantly under threat, especially in regions impacted by conflicts and political instability.

We’re back
ILYMUN is officially back for 2025! This year is extra special – not just because of the theme Democracy and Security in a World of Conflict, but also because we’re returning to our iconic venue, the Hôtel de Région Montrochet.
