ILYMUN: Preparing Young Minds for Global Leadership
Written by: Evgenii Lyzint
Intercommunication is key
It is beyond doubt that intercommunication is the key to success. Yet, the very foundations of modern society make it increasingly difficult for open discussion about diverging ideas to take place. The annual ILYMUN conference-assembly has been taking place since 2013 in the beautiful city of Lyon, France. This event aims to broaden and share perspectives on various real-world issues. The participants are young people who are passionate about and actively involved in exchanging ideas to change the world for the better. Through this conference, they explore the challenges the modern world is facing.
Perspectives from Participants: Insights on Themes, Skills, and Impact
This year’s conference's theme, chosen by the secretaries general, is "Democracy and Security in a World of Conflict". This topic was selected because it shed light on a crucial issue that is threatening our society today – democracy in crisis. This global issue will thus encourage participants to think critically and engage in meaningful discussions about these real-world challenges.
The qualities that conference participants consider essential are:
Open-mindedness – an attribute that helps delegates engage with viewpoints different from their own.
Diplomacy – allows for more constructive discussions and a better understanding of the complexities of making international agreements.
Determination – this is the key to appreciate ILYMUN to its fullest as delegates will need to persevere even when finding a common ground seems impossible.
ILYMUN 2025 provides a space for debate, encouraging young minds to engage in discussions and deepen their thinking in the political world.
ILYMUN 2025
The main theme of the ILYMUN 2025 conference is upholding Democracy and Security in a World of Conflict. It would challenge participants to explore innovative resolutions to some of the world’s most pressing matters.
Since debates cannot happen effectively without delegates first understanding the core concepts, guest speakers play a key role in setting the stage. These speakers are invited to introduce young participants to specific cases, such as crises and global challenges, providing them with important contexts and insights. For the 2025 conference, the organizing team is delighted to welcome approximately 13 esteemed guest speakers, each bringing their unique expertise to inspire and guide the delegates.
Through the scrupulous preparation process and debates, ILYMUN equips participants with invaluable skills in diplomacy, critical thinking, and public speaking, encouraging a new generation of global citizens and broad-minded thinkers. Participants represent countries or organizations in a simulated international forum stepping into the shoes of diplomats – they navigate complex discussion, and collaborate with peers to address challenges faced on the global stage.
ILYMUN 2025 Venue
Inaugurated in 2011, the Hôtel de Region building and its entire district, serve as a symbol of Lyon's evolution, balancing its rich history as a Roman city with its commitment to contemporary urban development. It is notable for its transparent and open design, meant to symbolise the accessibility and establishment of connection between the regional government and its citizens.
Each year, approximately 400 participants are warmly welcomed at the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Regional Council headquarters. This year will be no exception, with delegates from diverse backgrounds coming together to engage in meaningful dialogue, allowing countries, nations, and ideas to associate.
Voices of ILYMUN
As 2024 Head of Chair, Sukhada Joshi reflects, “Last year at ILYMUN, as the Head of Chairs and Chair of the OHCHR, I developed valuable skills in leadership, diplomacy, and facilitating debates on global issues.” She adds, “Overseeing the General Assembly allowed me to enhance my ability to manage large-scale discussions and ensure productive collaboration among delegates.”
Why do events like ILYMUN matter?
The complex challenges the world faces today, such as political unrest, wars, and the resulting thirst and hunger, make such events like ILYMUN even more important. The experience of participating in such debate-conferences allow young minds to develop critical thinking abilities and develop their world perspectives. Such events remind us of the importance of youth voices in shaping the world’s future. Join us and see yourself how today’s young minds are charting a brighter path for the future.
